Flamin' Groovies SUPERSNAZZ t-shirts Update: December 9, 2002
It's been a busy month for Cyril. A lifetime achievement award. A guest appearance onstage with the band Oranger at the Great American Music Hall. New recordings with a new band. A partial reunion of old Flamin' Groovies bandmates. Lots of new paintings. If there's one Cyril can't be accused of, it's sitting around idly.
The Lifetime Achievement award from the San Francisco Bay Guardian newspaper honored Cyril's creative output in a grandiose manner. An awards ceremony took place on Friday, November 8th at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, with writer John O'Neill providing a glowing introduction to one of his musical heroes. Friends, family, and fans came out to celebrate Cyril's special moment.
For
fans of the Flamin' Groovies, a bit of magic took place a few days later on
November 13th at the Parkside nightclub when Cyril Jordan decided jump onstage
for a couple songs with The Dilettones, Roy Loney's new band,
featuring James Ferrell, and Larry Lea. Introduced by Roy as "my
best friend," Cyril joined his old bandmate to share vocals on "Flight 505"
and "Teenage Head." Those that attended this event were treated to a very special
moment as three members of the FlaminÍ Groovies shared the stage once again.
Roy's new band sounded excellent at their debut performance, and Cyril's surprise
attendance at this show provided an unexpected treat to a packed house of euphoric
music lovers.
If that wasn't enough for one week, Cyril also joined local band Oranger for a few songs at their performance at the Saturday segment of the 2002 BayPop Festival, which also featured the Chocolate Watchband and the Electric Prunes. David Greenfield has kindly shared some photos from that particular evening.
By the way, if anyone out there in internet-land has some Flamin' Groovies material that they think might be a good addition to the eventual Flamin' Groovies video documentary, please contact us with some details of your collection. We are on the lookout for film, video, still photography, publications, and other memorabilia that features the band. Drop an email or snail mail to us, and we'll try to work out some type of mutually rewarding arrangement. It's
interesting to see the impact of the Flamin' Groovies in unexpected territories.
Recently, in an
issue of Music Connection, an industry trade magazine, a new band was
described as a cross between "Buddy Holly and the Flamin' Groovies."
It's nice to those little mentions.

As part of it's annual "GOLDIES" awards, the San Francisco Bay Guardian has bestowed Cyril Jordan with a special "LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT" citation. The "GOLDIES" are the Guardian Outstanding Local Discovery Awards, which honors individuals and groups whose works have enriched the lives of those living in the San Francisco region. A full-page tribute to Cyril can be seen in the November 6th issue of the Bay Guardian, which may also be seen online at:

A
ceremony will take place at 111 Minna Gallery on Friday, November 8th from 6:30pm
to 8:30pm.
Lately, Cyril has been extremely busy with his new recording project- The Magic Christian (as opposed to The Magic Christians), a group that consists of himself, Paul Kopf, Alec Palao, and Prairie Prince. The group has been recording up a storm at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, California. So far, they've recorded four new original songs- "Here She Comes," "Someday Soon," "Flash," and "Eye in the Sky," as well as a killer cover of the Who's "I Can See For Miles." Look for the official release of this material sometime in 2003.
